  MAodern Astrology
strology has a rich and varied history that dates all the way back
to 1968. Oh, sure, the origins of astrology go back thousands of
th
years, but astrology fell into an abyss at the end of the 18 century.
The astrology we practice today is descriptive, humanistic, and primarily concerned with what the natal chart has to say about our personalities and our futures. It has little connection to the astrology that came before it. Everything about how we practice astrology today is new—including how we incorporate traditional astrology. But for astrology to continue to evolve, we need a better understanding of how it got here. We need some sense of the history of modern astrology.
In A Brief (and Biased) History of Modern Astrology, I share some of what I consider to be the most important people, books, and innovations that have shaped astrology over the past century. It starts with a quick recap of the origins of astrology and what led to a two-century break with tradition. Next, it explores the rebirth of astrology in the West in the 20th century. Finally, it touches on the modern era of astrology, which began in 1968 with the publication of Linda Goodman’s Sun Signs.
There are many differences that separate “modern” astrology from “traditional” astrology, but the most obvious (and the most contentious) is rulership. Modern astrology attempts to incorporate the outer planets, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, into the system of sign rulership. Modern rulerships assign Uranus to Aquarius, Neptune to Pisces, and Pluto to Scorpio, but the traditional rulers of these signs are Saturn for Aquarius, Jupiter for Pisces, and Mars for Scorpio. In Practical Rulership, I look at the nature of rulership, the history of these debates, and explore the practical value of modern vs. traditional rulership.
