House and you use the modern rulerships, Uranus would represent and embody your one-to-one relationships. What, precisely can you do with that information? If Uranus represented other
people, no one would stick around long enough for you to learn their last names. With traditional rulerships, if Aquarius is on your Seventh House cusp, Saturn represents your relationships and your partners, and while that might not be a barrel of laughs, at least you can
work with it.
I don’t expect this argument to end the debate, but I hope it can elevate the discussion.
Factions, whether they be political parties or astrological orientations, can make rational debate and reasonable discussions almost impossible. We cling to our beliefs and prejudices and reject any evidence that suggests that we might be mistaken. The more egos and emotions are involved, the more difficult it becomes to consider new information while saving face.
Full disclosure, I used to be quite militant about traditional rulerships, and I’ve been in my fair share of heated discussions where I maintained
how clearly superior traditional rulerships are, and yet failed to create a compelling argument to support my beliefs. I believe that I’ve matured into a pragmatic, practical astrologer. I’m willing to consider any tool or technique so long as it has clear, demonstrated practical value.
After considering the origins, definitions, and applications of rulership, I haven’t found any practical value to the modern sign rulerships. In every context, I can get far more information from using traditional rulerships than I can from using modern rulerships.
