In theory, the Astrological Alphabet makes astrology easier to learn; but in practice, it makes it harder to master. Dobyns periodically states that the planets, signs, and houses are not interchangeable, but this is lost on most students of her system. Astrologers who learned astrology by being exposed to the Astrological Alphabet have immense difficulty understanding that the planets, signs, and houses have unique, distinct functions. Having a planet in the First
House is not remotely the same thing as having that planet in Aries. As a result of the Astrological Alphabet, the meanings of the planets, signs,
and houses have become muddled and confused for most astrologers.
But until the 1990s and the Astrological Renaissance, no one knew
any differently.
The Renaissance of Traditional Astrology
In 1992, Robert Schmidt, Ellen Black, Robert Hand, and Robert Zoller formed ARHAT, the Association for the Retrieval of Historic Astrological Texts. The objective of ARHAT was to create English translations of the entire body of western astrological writings, most of which only existed in Greek, Arabic, or Latin. In 1993, the translation project launched as Project Hindsight, and the initial translations were first sold by subscription and then published by The Golden Hind Press. In 1997, Robert Hand resigned from Project Hindsight to pursue his own commercial translation project, reclaiming the ARHAT name, while Project Hindsight
continues to explore Hellenistic Astrology.
Many other astrologers have joined the renaissance, providing
translations, commentary, and context for long forgotten
astrological texts. Dr. Benjamin Dykes has published a number of exceptional translations of many Arabic and Greek texts, in addition to a translation of Guido Bonatti’s Book of Astronomy. His book, Traditional Astrology for Today (2011) is perhaps the best introduction available to traditional astrology. I can’t recommend it highly enough.
