equal—some needs are more important than others. In fact, until we’ve met all of our “lower” needs, we won’t be motivated to meet any of our “higher” needs. Maslow summed his approach up in a hierarchy of needs that’s usually illustrated in a pyramid, as shown in Figure 1.
Physiological Needs
Your Physiological Needs include everything you need to survive, such as air, food, water, sleep, and shelter.
You will do anything to meet these needs, and I do mean anything. If these needs aren’t being met, the body’s instinctive, animal nature takes over.
Safety Needs
Your Safety Needs include everything you think you need to survive. In fact, you could survive without most of these things, although probably not without whining about it. To meet your Safety Needs, you have to believe that your Physiological Needs will be met in the future. Your Safety Needs motivate you to avoid physical and emotional pain.
Belongingness and Love Needs & Esteem Needs
Maslow’s next two categories of needs have to do with being loved and appreciated in relationships. Belongingness and Love Needs are about being loved
It’s not pretty.
SELF-ACTUALIZATION NEEDS
• Self-fulfillment • Desire to improve self and • Self-expression realize your true potential.
ESTEEM NEEDS
• Sense of mastery
• Desire for achievement
• Pride in accomplishments
• Admiration from others • Sense of competency
• Self-esteem & self-worth
VALIDATION NEEDS
BELONGINGNESS AND LOVE NEEDS
• Belonging/group identity & group acceptance
• Give & receive affection/love
• Appreciation
• Companionship
• Experience respect of others
• Physical & emotional safety
• Avoid physical & emotional pain
• Believe that you can meet your core needs
• Meet Physiological Needs • Personal space
• Emotional connections
Anything required for your physical survival and continued existence, including, but not limited to:
• Air
• Food • Water
• Shelter
• Sleep
• Nourishment
