is, “No!” It takes time and considerable energy to get a planet in a Fixed sign to accept change. Once it does change, that becomes the new normal, and inertia takes over once more.
When a planet in a Mutable sign is triggered, it responds. Planets in Mutable signs operate in the present moment, so they consider the trigger and can choose an appropriate response. However, that response may only address the immediate situation. It addresses the symptom, but not the cause.
WQualities of the Signs
hen you combine the qualities of the element and modality, you account for roughly 85% of the qualities associated with
each sign. e remaining qualities of each sign come from the planets with Essential Dignity for the sign.
ink of each sign as a corporation. e element and modality determine the nature of the business, but a Board of Directors manages each corporation. e Board of Directors sets policy, establishes goals and objectives, and determines how the corporation is run. When a planet occupies a sign, that planet takes direction from the members of the Board of Directors for the sign.
Each sign has up to ve seats on the Board of Directors, corresponding to the ve Essential Dignities: Rulership,
Exaltation, Triplicity, Term, and Face. e two most powerful dignities, Rulership and Exaltation, are sign- based. Venus rules the entire sign of Taurus; Jupiter is Exalted in the entire sign of Cancer. Triplicity is also sign- based, but it’s both a weaker in uence and dependent on the sect of the chart: one planet has Triplicity if it’s a day chart, but a di erent planet has Triplicity if it’s a night chart.
Here’s a brief overview of how the planets on the Board of Directors in uence the qualities of each sign.
Aries: Cardinal Fire
Mars has 5 votes for Rulership and
the Sun has 4 votes for Exaltation
on the Board of Directors of any
planet in Aries. In a day chart, the
Sun picks up an additional 3 votes
for Triplicity; in a night chart, those
votes go to Jupiter. Planets in Aries
take direction from Mars, the “little s” self and the Sun, the authentic “Big S” Self. It’s little wonder that planets in Aries are so concerned with individual identity (and have such di cultyrecognizingtheexistenceofotherindividuals).
Taurus: Fixed Earth
Venus has 5 votes for Rulership and the Moon has 5 votes for Exaltation on the Board of Directors of any planet in Taurus. In a day chart,
Venus picks up an additional 3 votes for Triplicity; in a night chart, those votes go to the Moon. Venus is the planet of pleasure and beauty, while the Moon relates to safety and nurturing. When you combine these with the Earth qualities, it’s obvious why planets in Taurus are so
motivated by the sensual experiences the physical world has to o er.
Gemini: Mutable Air
Mercury has 5 votes for Rulership on the Board of Directors of any planet in Gemini. In a night chart,
Mercury picks up an additional
