through most of the chart in an hour. But if you’re working as a counselor, you may spend the entire hour exploring a single planet in the chart.
In a chart reading, keywords are ne. You can mention that with Mercury in Leo, you communicate in a charismatic, magnanimous, enthusiastic fashion, but that you need to be careful because sometimes you can come o as egotistical, immodest, and supercilious. e client will nod agreement, and you can move on to the next
part of the chart. But in a counseling
session, the keywords aren’t enough.
For example, planets in Water signs approach the world from an emotional perspective. ey are motivated by feelings and subjective experiences; they operate on intuition and instinct. Planets in Air signs approach the world from a rational, objective, mental
You can use keywords to establish some parameters, but you have to be able to explore what those keywords really mean.
It’s not enough to reference the keywords for the signs; you must understand why
those keywords apply and where they came from.
“The element of a sign determines how a planet in that sign engages with the world.
The four elements and three
modalities combine to make up the twelve signs.
Aries is a Cardinal Fire sign. Virgo is a Mutable Earth sign. Scorpio is a Fixed Water sign. is is probably one of the rst things you learned when you entered the world of astrology. But chances are, you still don’t appreciate what
it means or how important it is. It’s not necessary to memorize keywords for all twelve signs. If you understand the meanings of the elements and the modalities, you can combine those qualities to describe any sign.
The elements de ne the context for each planet and the modalities describe how a planet expresses.
e four elements represent the four realms of existence. Fire is the spiritual realm; Water is the emotional realm; Air is the mental realm; and Earth is the material realm. e element of a sign determines how a planet in that sign engages with the world. e element is the language the planet speaks, and when that planet expresses, it does so from the context of that language.
perspective. A planet in an Air sign tends to dismiss feelings and emotions as being irrelevant, and a planet in a Water sign will never be convinced by reason or logic. Planets in Water signs aren’t incapable of reason, and planets in Air signs aren’t devoid of feelings, but when they are forced to operate (literally) out of their element, it is di cult and uncomfortable for them. And ultimately, they will need to translate the foreign concept into their own language so they can understand it and take action.
The element is the language the planet speaks, and when that planet expresses, it does so from the context of that language.”
