Your Story: The Hero’s Journey
The following is an excerpt from the upcoming book, Astrology & The Law of Attraction. It serves as an entree into the work of getting to know each of the seven Astrological Archetypes. Please note that while this article is available to everyone, from this point forth, you will have to log in as a member to view the rest of the tutorials in this section.
Once upon a time, there lived a race of eternal, multi-dimensional beings. Each one of these beings was infinitely powerful, and fully aware of the Truth that they were each individualized aspects of the Presence of the Divine. These beings were always searching for ways that they could experience the Truth of their Divinity in deeper, more powerful ways.
One day, one of these beings was inspired to create a game. This game would be an interactive, virtual reality Story where, for a time, any being could pretend to forget the Truth of their Divinity, and set out on a quest to rediscover this Truth. Each time they rediscovered the Truth, it would provide an even more joyous, powerful and deeper experience of the Divine.
Although the central theme of the Story would be the same for everyone, players could select from an infinite range of qualities and experiences that would lead them to a deeper appreciation of one or more of the qualities of the Divine. In most cases, players would select the qualities of the Divine that they most wished to know, and then would create experiences and “little s” stories that seem to represent the lack of or the opposite of this quality. The object of the game would be to discover the Truth that these qualities of the Divine are present in everything, and they have no opposites.
For example, players who wished to know Love might create experiences of betrayal, rejection or abandonment as key themes of their personal journey. Those who wished to know Power might create experiences of abuse, control, manipulation or victimhood.
In order to better hide the Truth, this game would take place in lower realms of consciousness and the dimensions of form.
Within the Story, each player would play the role of the Hero, living the life of the Hero and following the Hero’s journey. In order to complete the game, players would experience many “lives” living as different characters in different situations and circumstances. The story of each subsequent life would be shaped by the choices made in the previous lives. Many of the lessons require multiple lifetimes to complete.
As the player enters the game, the true light of their being separates into seven Archetypes. During the course of the game, the player must encounter and move into Right Relationship with each Archetype. Only then will the archetypes reintegrate into a united whole once again. This is the ultimate goal of the game, and it is known as Enlightenment.
Each player begins as the Archetype of the Sun: The Hero. This is the “Big S” Self, the ultimate Truth of who we really are. This energy enters the physical body that will navigate through the world of form at the Crown Chakra. The Archetype of the Sun represents our ultimate potential, but we must learn how to access and express it. However, we are not aware of our destiny, that we are the Sun, The Hero, the ruler of the land. The other six archetypes take advantage of this and follow their own whims, ultimately creating havoc and disarray. At some point, we hear the Call, and make the conscious choice to become the Hero, and the next phase of our Journey begins. We set out across the land, meeting each of the Archetypes and striving to move into Right Relationship with them. We encounter friends, allies and teachers, as well as challenges, obstacles, and adversaries. As we face each challenge, our Power grows, and we begin to embody and express the true nature of the Sun.
The next Archetype we encounter is Saturn: The Judge. Saturn is the Archetype that is in charge of the world of form. We experience Saturn at the first or Root Chakra, as we fully anchor in the experience of a physical body. To say that this experience is shocking and unpleasant is a tremendous understatement. We are using our infinite, unlimited Power to convince ourselves that we are finite and limited. This is the Fall of Man: the transition from the infinite, unbounded, non-physical Reality into the limited, restricted world of form.
We are traumatized beyond words by this experience, and want nothing more than to return to the Truth of our Divinity. We turn to the Moon for support and guidance. The Moon is the Archetype of the Reflection, and we encounter the Moon in the sixth chakra, known as the Third Eye, in the center of the forehead. The Moon is our connection to the higher realms of Spiritual Truth, and our ability to “see” beyond the appearance of form. Our first experience of the Moon, however, is very disorienting. From this experience of form and separation, we see an infinite number of projections and reflections. For the first time, we have an experience of being separate, and of the idea that our Source, the emotional and spiritual connections that feed us could be outside of us. Our happiness, in short, appears to be somewhere outside of us. We forget that the way home is to close our eyes and follow our feelings, turning away from the feelings that are unpleasant, and following those that feel good.
We feel lost and alone and frightened, and this is when we first encounter Mars, the Archetype of The Warrior. Mars lives in the third chakra, located at the solar plexus. Mars is the ego, the animal brain in charge of operating and maintaining the physical body while we have the human experience. Mars does not understand the greater Reality beyond the world of form. Mars believes that he is completely in charge, and since we are so out of touch with The Sun, our true “Big S” Self, we believe Mars. We begin to identify as the ego, the “little s” self. We progressively forget the Truth that we are infinite, and believe the illusion that we are separate, finite, bodies.
Mars offers to protect us, and we accept. Every time we experience an unpleasant emotion in one of the Moon’s mirrors, Mars jumps up to battle it. We have yet to discover that we are only fighting our own reflection, and that the more we resist the pain, the more it persists.
It is at this point, through the eyes of Mars and the reflections of the Moon, that we first encounter Venus, the Archetype of The Beloved. Venus reminds us of what we have lost, and promises us true happiness. Venus is what compels us to embark on the Hero’s Journey, because the only way that we can truly connect with The Beloved is to fulfill our potential as The Hero. Because we are viewing Venus through Mars and the Moon, however, we begin our search by looking outside of ourselves, rather than by looking within.
As we begin our attempt to make sense of this strange new reality, we encounter Mercury, the Archetype of The Storyteller in the fifth chakra, located in the hollow of the throat. Mercury records our thoughts and our experiences. The words that Mercury uses and the “little s” stories that he tells begin to shape our perceptions, our experiences, and our expectations. Very quickly, Mercury assumes completely control over our “little r” reality. We forget that we are merely telling ourselves stories, and instead we believe that the stories that we tell are real. Each time we tell a story, it calls up the feeling associated with that experience; if that feeling is painful, Mars jumps in to defend us, which only reinforces the pain. This feeds back into the story, creating an endless, ever-increasing loop.
Finally, we encounter Jupiter, the Archetype of the Dreamer. Jupiter resides in the fourth chakra, in the heart. Jupiter offers us the ability to expand our awareness and consciousness. When we change the context, we discover that we are able to change the meaning we give to the stories we tell ourselves. Through Jupiter, we develop faith, the ability to trust in the “Big R” Reality that contains the limited “little r” reality. As we dream and expand our consciousness, we begin to change our stories. As we change the words, we change the world, and we discover how to step into Right Relationship with each of the Archetypes in turn.
