Ask Kevin Sun Signs & Daily Horoscopes

Sun Signs and Personality Traits

Ashlee Asks:

“I was recently reading a book which describes how personalities and birthdays are interrelated. It was very interesting; however, when I looked up my boyfriend’s birthday, I was instantly alarmed. It described many bad things about his personality and really has me worried. I was wondering if these books were correct and should I be on guard?”

Kevin Answers:

Ashlee,

Please accept my sympathy if you were upset by someone’s irresponsible approach to astrology. You do not need to be disturbed by anything distressing that was printed with respect to your boyfriend’s birthday, because nothing that you read is necessarily true—not only for your boyfriend, but also for anyone. The other side of this coin, however, is that this also goes for anything “good” that you read there, too.

Sun Sign Predictions

Kathryn Asks:

“In the past year or so, I’ve been doing natal charts for friends, and hope to do so one day as a business. One thing I don’t quite understand is the method of daily horoscopes you see in the newspapers. I understand that these are based on Sun Sign characteristics, and it seems to me that based on that, you could probably write just about anything regarding a certain area of life. Could you shed some light on this? Also, when these horoscopes are calculated, are they based on a “natural Zodiac chart” (i.e., Aries = First House; Taurus = 2nd house, etc.). I would like to learn more about accurately charting transits and predictive astrology.

Kevin Answers:

Kathryn,

As you’ve probably noticed, I’m not a big fan of Sun Sign columns, and don’t consider them to be real astrology. To be fair, many Sun Sign columns are written by extremely talented astrologers, who do so because, frankly, it pays well, and it’s quite difficult to make a living full-time as an astrologer. This in no way changes the fact that they are entirely worthless as a predictive tool and should only ever be considered to be a somewhat entertaining diversion.

Born on the "Cusp"

Tracey Asks:

“What exactly does it mean to be ‘born on the cusp?’ I was born on October 20...I’ve been told I am either Libra (which I’ve assumed all my life) or possibly a Scorpio?”

E. Moore Asks:

“What happens if you are a cusp person, e.g., on the cusp of Pisces and Aquarius?”

Kevin Answers:

Tracey and E.,

In modern astrology usage, the term “cusp” or “on the cusp” generally indicates a planet that is near the boundary of two signs, or of two houses. When most people talk about being “born on the cusp” they mean that their birth date falls close to one of the “Sun Sign” boundaries given along with most “sun sign” astrology columns. While I am obligated to remind everyone that the type of “Sun Sign” astrology published in “horoscope” columns in popular newspapers and magazines has little or no validity, being born with one’s Sun on the cusp of the next sign can be rather significant in terms of real astrology.
